1. Re: Free camping. There is no camping in Milford only a dump station. Low cost or free camping avaliable at Hollyford Gunns Camp. There are also several DOC (department of conservation) camps. These have toilets and power avaliable and are on the route from Te Anau to Milford.

Camping in the car park. Review of Milford Sound Lodge. Reviewed March 24, 2014. We stayed here for one reason and that's clearly because it's right on top of the cruise terminals. They have the monopoly and therefore charge because of it, $48, and our camper was parked in the car park, as it's a really busy place, we didn't get a good nights.

I have heard before that there's a rule no freedom camping within 500m of a Great Walk Track. This might even be further now. So, the answer to your question is that you can't freedom camp on the Routeburn or Milford Tracks. Report inappropriate content. NZMike57.
