From 1885 to 1893, Lethbridge was the western terminus of a narrow-gauge railway between the town and Dunmore Junction on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline near Medicine Hat. The CPR needed to build a bridge that allowed the railway to cross the Belly (now Oldman) River.
